Volunteer: Burris Park Cut & Learn Event – Buckthorn and Non-native Bush Honeysuckles RemovalGreetings! Are you concerned about the impact Buckthorn and non-native bush honeysuckles have on our natural habitats? Do you like being outdoors and participating in hands-on activities? If you answered “yes” to both of these questions, the Carnelian-Marine-St. Croix Watershed District and Washington Conservation District invite you to participate in a Cut and Learn Event at Burris Park. The event will provide volunteers an opportunity to remove the invasive species and to participate in a tour of the Mill Stream Restoration project that aims to improve the ecology of the stream. If you have a couple of hours to spare on a Saturday morning, read on! WHAT: Volunteers will receive training on how to identify the targeted invasive species and the proper techniques for using tools to cut and treat the plants to prevent further growth and spreading. Tools will be available; however, if you have your own pruning saw, hand pruner, or lopper please feel free to bring them. Be sure to mark your tools for identification. WHERE: We will meet in the parking lot behind St. Croix Chocolate Co., 261 Parker St., Marine on St Croix, MN, 55047 (map) WHEN: Saturday, September 27 from 10:00am – Noon (Inclement Weather Date – Saturday, October 11 from 10:00am – Noon) OTHER DETAILS: Please note that you must complete and submit a Volunteer Waiver, Release and Acknowledgement of Risk form to be eligible to participate in this event. Volunteer: Adopt a Storm DrainMore than 1000 volunteers have adopted storm drains in Washington County! You can make a difference by volunteering just 15-minutes, twice a month, to keep your nearest storm drain clear of litter, leaves, grass clippings and dirt. Go to Adopt-a-Drain.org and use the map to find your neighborhood storm drains – then click and sign-up to adopt. Spend a few minutes each month picking up the garbage and debris near your drain and then go online to report your work so that we can measure our collective impact. www.Adopt-a-Drain.org To dispose of the waste you collect, separate it into three categories and place it in the appropriate receptacle: trash, recyclables (glass and plastic bottles, cans) and compostables (leaves and grass clippings). Sediment collected in the spring contains winter road salt and should be put in the trash. Volunteer: Storm Drain StencilingThis is a perfect project for youth groups and teams! Help to protect local lakes, rivers, and streams by educating the community. Many people don't realize that storm drains in streets connect directly to waterways without any treatment. Anything that goes down the storm drain - litter, dog poop, dirt, grass clippings, road salt, etc. - ends up in our water. We have storm drain stencils, spray paint, and safety cones and vests for volunteers to use while stenciling storm drains in their neighborhoods. "Do not dump - drains to lake [wetland or river]." Volunteers can also distribute door-hangers to promote the Adopt-a-Drain program while they are out stenciling. www.Adopt-a-Drain.org Affiliate: Washington Conservation District This is a perfect project for youth groups and teams!
