Volunteer: Home Services Volunteer

Home is where the heart is, but staying there can become harder with age. Simple tasks shouldn’t stand in the way of aging in place. With help from neighbors like you, more older adults in our community can continue living safely and comfortably at home.

Your 90 minutes matter. As a Home Services Volunteer, you choose your project and your shift as needs arise. You can help multiple times per month or just a few times per year! In visits of no more than 90 minutes, you will ensure that a neighbors’ homes remain their place of comfort and joy. Home Services Volunteers can assist in one or more of the following ways:

Simple assessment of one’s ability to function well in their spaceGeneral assistance with basic household choresCompletion of a small checklist of routine maintenance tasksSeasonal adoption of a yard or driveway for lawnmowing, raking, or snow removal (PERFECT for groups, teams, and families!)

Ready to learn more? Start with a Home Services Volunteer Info Session. Our next session is Wednesday, July 22 at 11am at Community Thread (2300 Orleans St. W. in Stillwater). A virtual option will be made available for this session as well. Check back for a link closer to the date.

By attending an info session, there is NO commitment needed—just discover the joy of helping a neighbor! Can’t make it to a session? Email Rachel for more information.

For more than 50 years, Community Thread’s ride services program has relied on volunteers. In fact, the program is not possible without volunteers! With an increase in our older adult population and the growth in the need for local transportation solutions, your support couldn’t be more valuable than it is today. Volunteer Drivers provide an essential service to neighbors in central and northern Washington County. Are you ready to help in a simple, flexible way?

Being a volunteer driver is truly flexible- as a driver, you have access to an online calendar of rides that your neighbors need, and with a click of the button, you sign up for the rides you can do!We expect at least a 3-day notice from a rider, so urgent requests are rare. You can plan ahead if that suits you best.Rides currently take place Mondays-Fridays from roughly 8am-5pm, but we are hoping to special requests for evenings and weekends soon. In any case, you choose when you can do rides. If there’s an emergency, we have a guide to help you deal with special scenarios, and our office staff can be available to support you. This role requires: 8 years of driving experience, a valid driver’s license, a reliable vehicle, proof of insurance, and ability to schedule rides using email and/or a simple online portal.
